7:30 pm @ The Legion at 9 Dawes Road

Officer Rob McDonald (Toronto Police Services)
  • Officer Rob McDonald from Toronto Police Services was present to discuss how we should report safety issues in the neighbourhood.  Officer McDonald said it’s crucial that we report every troubling incident since it’s been proven that when calls to the police increase, crime decreases.
  • When there is an ongoing complaint, we can call 55 division directly at 416-808-5500 OR fill out a community complaint form.  Either way, a Community Response Officer will be assigned to the complaint and will follow up on the issue for a 6 week window.
  • A community complaint form was created for the Sunshine Bar & Mel-Low Bar and signed by all residents present last night.  Officer Rob is looking into our complaint which includes:  drinking and driving concerns, loud noise from the patio at night, unsightly behaviour of patio patrons, and concerns about possible drug dealing.  Heather is the contact person for the group community complaint and will let the group know when an update has been provided by TPS.
  • For all noise complaints, lighting and graffiti concerns, contact 55 division.
  • Officer McDonald can be contacted directly at 416-808-5579 as well as on Twitter @TPSOfficerRob.
  • Officer McDonald encouraged us to shop locally since street activity provides a sense of safety and keeps crime out.

Robert Labbe (Options for Homes Condo Developer)

  • Options for Homes is the organization responsible for the condo development which will be replacing the bingo hall on Trent Avenue.  They provide cost effective option for home ownership that focus on high quality without the frills.
  • The current plan is to put up a 12 floor condo with 277 units.  There will be street scaping as well as a focus on “green” building methods and a solar panel heating system.
  • Currently, Options for Homes has put in an application to have the hall rezoned for residential use.  Once that is approved there will be series of public meetings organized to get input from the community.  If all is approved, the construction of the building will likely take 18 months.
  • There may be some noise but it should be quite limited to when the concrete slabs are being put in place for floors 1-8 and after that we won’t be able to hear much.

Bob Smith (Danforth Village BIA, Treasurer/Secretary)

  • Noah’s Ark will likely be turning into a clothing store chain.  Details are TBC.
  • Garbage in lane ways should be reported to 311 by phone (311) or via email 311@toronto.ca.  Once the complaint has been made, we’ll be given a reference number that will exist until the issue has been resolved. Garbage complaints will probably be relayed to Municipal Licensing and Standards for resolution.
  • Planters that currently have flowers in them will soon be switched over to mini Christmas Trees and alternating Sprigs.
  • Support our BIA by shopping locally!
Mary-Margaret McMahon, Ward 32 Councillor

  • Mary-Margaret is our local Councillor and lives close by just south of Danforth near Woodbine.  She helped start up the Danforth East Community Association which implemented many community programs including the East Lynn Farmer’s Market.

  • She encouraged us to get in touch with the Secord Village Residents’ Association (just north of us), as well as setting up a safety walk with Officer Rob.  Other idea she told us about was “Rally in the Alley” where we can get together as a group for a few hours and clean up trash…then maybe have a BBQ to celebrate.
